Last Fathers Day my family took me for a meal at the regionally reknowned Terrain Cafe at Styers in Glens Mills, PA. If you've never been, imagine Williams and Sonoma meets your favorite local family owned outdoor gardening center or greenhouse. The primitive but very intentional merchandising throughout greenhouses, wandering pathways, small sheds was as interesting as it's brick an mortar counterparts owned by the parent company URBN operators of Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie. I enjoyed a local beer tasting, a summer infused culinary salsa, and honestly couldn't wait to visit again. Yesterday I stopped by to snap a few photos of the trip and wanted to share a few great display ideas for specialty foods.

Adventures in Heat: Buffalo, NYMy friend George at Adventures in Heat knows how to create atmosphere when it comes to grilling and outdoor dining. His shop highlights the latest in outdoor ovens, high-end grilling, and one of the largest selections of everything HOT SAUCE I've ever seen. George and I met at the Clarence, NY farmers market many years ago, and have continued our conversations over time and occasional drop by visits. His line of spices is so big that he even carries South Jersey's Famous HITZEL's SPICE BLENDS, a creation of Ed Hitzel, restaurant critic, radio personality, and restaurant guidebook publisher. www. I learned something new on my last trip about hot sauce. There is an underground hot sauce scene with celebrity and signature pieces of art. Some of the hot sauces in this case sell for hundreds of dollars, If I remember correctly up to $800 dollars. They are enclosed in a specialty bottle, vamped up with high end packaging, and sealed with colored wax like a bottle of Makers Mark. George highlights these items in this case. What I liked most of all about this display was that it was a focal point in the center of the store. Beyond that, it gave everyone who entered and noticed it a conversation piece to share with friends all around town. George spent some time sharing the story with me about these collectibles. Opportunities like this probably exist in many different food businesses. How to do we take the core offering we sell and display the extreme example as a way to generate press, word-of-mouth marketing, and a memorable experience for our guests and customers? Consider how you can add a super hot marketing visual to your business.
